I
am a native of Whiteville, North
Carolina, and lived in North Carolina
for 12 years. I moved to the State of Georgia
at the age of 12. A graduate of Valdosta
State University, with
a master’s degree in Administration and Supervision, Physical Education and Health, and an undergraduate degree in Social
Studies. I also earned a masters certification in Driver and Traffic Safety
from the University of Georgia. I retired from the public school system after 28 years of coaching and teaching. I was awarded two years of military service towards my retirement, therefore I was
able to retire at 30 years. I taught and coached at Valdosta
High School, Valdosta,
Ga. for 11 years and at Washington-Wilkes
High School in Washington
Ga. for 17 years. I am a disabled
veteran from the Viet Nam War, where I served
in the United States Air Force for three and
a half years.
I served as a High School Athletic Director for 17 years and assisted with administrative
duties as an assistant principal, on the high school level. Immediately after
my retirement from the High School ranks, I was hired as the Director Of High
School Relations by Coach George O’Leary at Georgia Tech in 1998. I served
in that capacity for four years and have since been promoted to the position
of Director of Football Operations . I am currently in my eighth year at Georgia Tech.
As a High School Head Football
Coach for 18 years, we won 144 games and lost
55, a .723 winning percentage, earning berths in the state football playoffs in 13 of his last 17 seasons at Washington-Wilkes.
In 1985, I was named
the Atlanta Touchdown Club AA Coach of the Year, and in both 1991 and 1997, I was named the state AA Athletic Director of
the Year.
During my time at Washington-Wilkes, I coached the football team to six region championships and four appearances in the
AA state championship game. I also was the head golf coach at Washington-Wilkes,
and led my golf teams to eight region titles.
Prior to my tenure at Washington-Wilkes,
I spent eleven years at Valdosta High
School. Two years as a volunteer coach and
nine years as a teacher and athletic staff member of Valdosta High
School. I spent nine years (1971-80) as an assistant football and baseball coach.
In 1974, I was named the head baseball coach and in 1976, I was named the offensive co-ordinator in football. As head baseball coach, we had an overall record of 127-33, a .793 winning percentage,
four region championships, and one state championship. As offensive co-ordinator
in football, we won two region championships and one state championship.
I am married to the former Kathy Zelenka and have three children and four grandchildren.
